Phuket, Thailand – November 2024
I have always believed in the power of self-care. Not just the candlelit-bath kind, but the deeper kind where you finally do something for yourself. After years of considering aesthetic treatments, I decided to take the plunge and travel to Thailand, the global capital of medical tourism, for a procedure I had long dreamed of.
A New Kind of Getaway
I booked through Restored Beauty Getaways, a company specialising in trusted cosmetic and plastic surgery packages in Thailand and Bali. From the moment I stepped off the Emirates flight in Phuket, I understood why so many people choose this destination for treatment. The service, warmth, and professionalism are on another level.
My journey began at Bangkok Hospital Siriroj, a gleaming, modern medical hub where hospitality meets healthcare. After meeting my wonderful client manager, Nokky, and my surgeon, Dr Jib, I was guided through every pre-op test imaginable, from cardiac checks to full blood panels. My chosen procedure was VASER liposuction on my inner thighs, a treatment costing around €2,500 here compared to over €5,000 in Ireland.
Thailand’s affordability does not mean compromise. Many hospitals are JCI-accredited, meeting the same international standards as Western clinics. With lower operating costs and government-backed medical tourism incentives, patients like me can access world-class expertise at humane prices.
The Day of the Transformation
On November 7th, I arrived at the hospital at 8 a.m., fasting and slightly nervous. My private recovery room looked more like a boutique hotel suite than a ward, complete with a balcony, toiletries, a fridge stocked with drinks, and a waterfall shower. When Dr Jib entered with his marker pen to map the surgical areas, I saw the focus of an artist at work.
Moments later, anaesthetist Peter, a kind-eyed professional who held my hand as I drifted off, told me not to worry. Ninety seconds later, lights out.
When I woke, it was 3 p.m., and Dr Jib was smiling beside me. “700cc from each thigh,” he said proudly, and I instantly pictured two cartons of Avonmore pink milk as reference. Wrapped in a compression garment and floating on morphine, I slept peacefully that night.
Healing in Paradise
The following days blurred into sunshine and slow walks. Recovery in Thailand is surreal. I would sip coconut water by the pool while elevating my legs, alternating between gratitude and grogginess. Swelling and bruising are inevitable, but the staff’s care softened every discomfort.
And because aesthetics never sleeps in Phuket, I also booked light post-surgery treatments once cleared:
- Botox (five areas for €128, about one-third of Irish prices) Phuket aesthetic surgery botox
- Tattooed brows by the incredible Jump Anawat (€75 versus €400 at home)
- Blow-dries for €8, shellac manicures for €8, and lash extensions for €12.50
Every clinic, from Phuket Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Clinic to JB Brows Phuket, shared one common thread: professionalism and kindness.
Post-Surgery Care and the Kaizen Approach
Back home in Dublin, the recovery continued, and that is where Kaizen Clinics came in. After my return, my body was still adjusting, with mild swelling, stiffness, and fatigue. Kaizen’s Radio Frequency became the missing link between surgery and full restoration.
Using controlled infrared warmth and lymphatic-boosting techniques, these sessions helped flush residual fluid, reduce swelling, and stimulate collagen repair. The experience felt equal parts spa and science, a gentle awakening for my circulation.
My therapist, Barbara, is skilled in working with post-operative bodies, understanding how to encourage healing without over-stimulating fragile tissue. After two sessions, my legs felt lighter, less tight, and noticeably smoother.
Reflections on Beauty and Balance
Medical tourism is sometimes viewed as indulgent or risky, but my experience was the opposite. It was empowering, structured, and deeply healing. Thailand’s combination of advanced medical care, natural serenity, and genuine warmth offers something few destinations can: beauty with soul.
There is something about Phuket that stays with you long after the swelling fades, a quiet pull back to where beauty and healing first met.
And as I prepare to return this November for my check-up, I can’t help but wonder what else I will rediscover there. Stay tuned for my next update….
